Best New Artist winners who were not new

Best New Artist does not go to an artist’s first record. It goes to the year the Recording Academy decides they broke through, and that can come a decade into a career. Shelby Lynne won it in 2001 with her sixth album. Bon Iver, Esperanza Spalding and Zac Brown Band all had records out years before they won.

The rule behind this is short. Grammy.com asks for at least five tracks or one album, and an artist who has “achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness” during the eligibility year. There is no upper limit on how much they have released before that.

Shelby Lynne: thirteen years and six albums

Lynne’s first album, Sunrise, came out in 1989. Four more followed before I Am Shelby Lynne in 2000, the album that won her the award. When she collected the award at the 2001 ceremony she said: “Thirteen years and six albums to get here.” She is the clearest case of the category rewarding a breakthrough rather than a debut.

Bands that started independent

Zac Brown Band put out Home Grown on their own in 2004. Their first album on a major label, The Foundation, arrived in 2008, and they won Best New Artist at the 2010 ceremony.

Bon Iver followed a similar path. Justin Vernon released For Emma, Forever Ago himself in July 2007, and Jagjaguwar reissued it in February 2008. The award came at the 2012 ceremony, after the second album.

Jazz winners with a catalogue

Esperanza Spalding had three albums out when she won in 2011: Junjo in 2006, Esperanza in 2008 and Chamber Music Society in 2010. Samara Joy’s debut came out in 2021, and she won Best New Artist at the 2023 ceremony with her second album, Linger Awhile, which took Best Jazz Vocal Album the same night.

Already known from a group

Jody Watley won in 1988 after years singing with Shalamar. Lauryn Hill won in 1999 for her solo album, but she had already won two Grammys at the 1997 ceremony as a member of the Fugees, for The Score.

The last three winners

Victoria Monét released her first EP on Atlantic in 2014 and spent years writing for other singers, Ariana Grande above all. She was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2020 ceremony as a songwriter on Grande’s Thank U, Next. Her own debut album, Jaguar II, came out in 2023, and she won Best New Artist the following February.

Chappell Roan signed with Atlantic in May 2015, released her first EP in 2017 and was dropped by the label in August 2020. She put out her debut album in 2023 and won at the 2025 ceremony. Olivia Dean’s debut, Messy, was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2023. She won Best New Artist at the 2026 ceremony with her second album, The Art of Loving.

Who cannot win it

For some years in the 2010s the Academy capped the count at three albums or 30 tracks, which would have ruled out Lynne. That cap was dropped for the 2021 awards. What the Academy limits instead is how often an artist can be put forward: no more than three times before, counting entries as part of a group.

Prior nominations used to count against an artist too. Lady Gaga was ruled out in 2010 because Just Dance had already been nominated for a Grammy, and the Academy changed the rule afterwards.

Guess the Artist uses the year of each act’s first studio album as one of its clues, which is often years before the moment most people heard of them.
