Guess the Artist
One of 228 famous singers and bands has been picked. Name any act and the row that comes back compares it with the answer: country, genre, year of the first album, number of members and who sings. You have 8 guesses.
- Same as the answer.
- Close. The answer is from the same continent, a neighbouring genre, within two years of that debut or one member away. On vocals, one of the two line-ups is mixed.
- ↑The answer debuted later or has more members. ↓ means earlier or fewer.
How the clues are decided
What do the colours mean on each column?
›
What do the colours mean on each column?
›Green is an exact match. Yellow is close, and close has a fixed meaning for each column. On Country it means the same continent. On Genre it means a neighbouring genre, so a rock guess is yellow against a metal answer. On Debut it means a first album within two years. On Members it means one member more or fewer. On Vocals it means one of the two acts has men and women sharing lead. Grey means none of that applies.
Which way do the arrows point?
›
Which way do the arrows point?
›Toward the answer. An up arrow on Debut means the answer released its first album later than your guess did, and a down arrow means earlier. On Members an up arrow means the answer has more members. The arrow stays on a yellow cell too, so a yellow 1985 with an up arrow means 1986 or 1987.
Who is in the pool?
›
Who is in the pool?
›228 acts that most listeners could name without being a fan of the genre, picked by how many fans they have on streaming and how many people read about them on Wikipedia. 70 released their first album before 1980, 77 between 1980 and 1999, and 81 in 2000 or later. Solo careers count as separate acts from the bands they came from, so Beyoncé and Destiny's Child are both in, and so are Paul McCartney and The Beatles.
What counts as the debut year?
›
What counts as the debut year?
›The year of the first studio album released under that name or by that person. Mixtapes, EPs, live albums and compilations do not count, which puts Drake at 2010 and not at his first mixtape in 2006. Some dates surprise people: Katy Perry's first album came out in 2001, a gospel record under the name Katy Hudson, seven years before her first pop hit.
How are the members counted?
›
How are the members counted?
›A solo act is one, and the number for a band is the line-up on the records it is best known for, not its current line-up. Queen is four and Iron Maiden is five, even though Iron Maiden has played as a six-piece since 1999. Gorillaz counts as its four cartoon members.
Which genres count as neighbours?
›
Which genres count as neighbours?
›Pop borders rock, R&B, electronic, Latin, K-pop and country. Rock borders metal, punk and folk, and folk borders country. Hip-hop borders R&B and reggae, and R&B borders jazz. A genre label is an opinion, and many acts fit more than one, so each act has the one a casual listener would give. The neighbours are there so a near miss reads as yellow rather than as a dead end.
What does Guests mean on the Vocals column?
›
What does Guests mean on the Vocals column?
›The act is a producer or an electronic duo whose best known records are sung by other people. Avicii, David Guetta and Daft Punk are in this group. Guests has no yellow, because a hired singer tells you nothing about who sings for anyone else.
Which country does an act count as?
›
Which country does an act count as?
›The place it started, which is not always where the members were born or live now. Bee Gees count as Australian, because the brothers started out in Queensland, and Fleetwood Mac count as British, because the band formed in London. The United Kingdom is one country here, so Scottish and Welsh acts share a flag with English ones. Puerto Rico has its own entry, with the code PR in place of a flag.
Can I guess someone who is not in the pool?
›
Can I guess someone who is not in the pool?
›No. The search box only offers acts from the pool, because every guess has to be comparable on all five columns. A name it cannot find is a name the answer cannot be, so you never waste a guess. Accents and punctuation are optional when you type: beyonce finds Beyoncé and acdc finds AC/DC.
Does choosing an era make it easier?
›
Does choosing an era make it easier?
›It narrows who the answer can be, not who you can guess. The eras follow the debut year, so an act that peaked in the 2000s after a first album in 1996 counts as MTV. A guess from another era still tells you about country, genre and vocals.
The best first guess, worked out
Every guess splits the 228 possible answers into groups: all the acts that would have given you exactly the row you got back. Run every act in the pool as a first guess against every possible answer and you can measure an opener by the average size of the group it leaves you in.
Nirvana comes out on top, leaving about 6.1 acts on average out of 228. A good opener sits in the middle of the pool: a debut year most acts are near, a genre with several neighbours, and a line-up size that splits solo acts from bands.
| OPENER | ACTS LEFT |
|---|---|
| Nirvana | 6.1 |
| The Killers | 6.1 |
| The Strokes | 6.2 |
| Paramore | 6.3 |
| Nickelback | 6.4 |
| Foo Fighters | 6.4 |
The worst openers are BTS, Karol G and J Balvin, each leaving 34 or more acts on average. An act from the far edge of the pool comes back mostly grey, and grey rules out less than it seems to. With 8 guesses you can afford one of those, but not as your first.
Two countries fill most of the chart
124 of the 228 acts are American and 55 are British, which leaves 49 for the other 17 countries. An American guess splits the pool close to in half whichever way it comes back. 6 countries have a single act in the pool, so a green on one of those flags ends the round. Yellow means the same continent, and the continents are just as lopsided:
- NORTH AMERICA143 · 63%
- EUROPE73 · 32%
- OCEANIA5 · 2%
- SOUTH AMERICA4 · 2%
- ASIA3 · 1%
Which genres are worth a yellow
Rock and pop together cover 60% of the pool and are neighbours, so one guess from either side tests both. The small genres work the other way: a green on K-pop, Reggae or Jazz leaves a handful of names.
- Pop69 · 30%
- Rock67 · 29%
- R&B21 · 9%
- Hip-hop20 · 9%

- Country5 · 2%
- Folk4 · 2%
- Jazz3 · 1%
- K-pop3 · 1%
- Reggae2 · 1%
When the pool made its first album
The 1990s gave the pool more first albums than any other decade, 43 of them. A debut year near the middle of the chart has the best chance of a yellow, and the arrow rules out one side of the chart even when the cell comes back grey.

Solo acts, bands and who sings
136 of the 228 acts are solo, 60% of the pool, so the Members column is close to a yes or no on your first guess. A band guess comes back with an arrow pointing down whenever the answer has fewer members, which sends you straight to the singers. There are 6 duos, and a duo guess is yellow against a solo answer. The largest line-ups have 9 members, and only 2 acts reach it.
On vocals, 151 acts have a male lead and 69 a female one. 3 have men and women sharing lead, and 5 are producers and electronic acts who hire singers for their records. A green on Guests or Mixed is the strongest clue this column can give.
